summer is officially on. i just moved into my new apartment in pittsburgh, and the new kate moss for topshop high summer collection is being released tomorrow. or for those of us in the US, tonight at like 3 am. still haven't decided whether i'm going to attempt to get something. i'm not too impressed with the collection as a whole, but there are definitely a few pieces i would love to have. these are my favorites, but you can check out the rest at nitrolicious.

ah, i've totally been neglecting the blog! finals week was insane and then i was dragged off on a last minute trip to nyc with my friend kate. did way too much shopping including some awesome beacon's closet finds (an APC cardigan, an alexandre herchcovitch tshirt, and a NWT vest from urban outfitters). also spent way too much on food...sushi+udon, morroccan, thai, omelet crepes, apple and asparagus pizza, dim sum. all delicious though. state college has some pretty good restaurants but there's nothing like food in new york city. unfortunately i'm now broke and rushing to get everything prepared before i move to pittsburgh on tuesday. somehow i managed to get a haircut today which i haven't done for a year and a half. i really missed my bangs!

back in high school, i went through a phase where i was obsessed with the yeah yeah yeahs. it was around the time that "maps" came out. yeah, just like everyone else in the free world. still a great song, but after the "fever to tell" hype died down i pretty much got over them, and no i never heard "show your bones" and i wasn't planning on hearing their new album, "it's blitz." but of course, their video for the first single, "zero," was playing on mtv and though i'm not really into the song, i'm entirely loving the video.

alright, it's not the most interesting video ever made, but O-M-G something about the way karen o wears that jacket...nope, i'm still not over studs and general balmainia and everything 80s revival, i admit it. here's some stills i took from the video, sorry in advance for the poor quality but it's the best i could find. you can watch the whole thing on youtube.

don't get me wrong, i love nylon magazine. but i've been a little irked by the content of their blogs recently. i'm so totally sick of hearing about lame surf/skate brands like roxy and vans (come on, at least upgrade and cover insight, rvca, or even volcom...) and don't even get me started on twilight and WTF hunter x jimmy choo wellies?! that's not okay, even a little bit. BUT i was really intrigued by this reader-submitted photo of street artist ellis g "firetagging" a wall. SO COOL. SOOO COOL.

i also have to credit them with turning me onto designer erin kleinberg. i confess, i still am not over the pocket tee, and i think erin has put an interesting twist on the classic style. some of my favorite pieces are below, but i would really suggest downloading her lookbook (PDF). the little details are too hard to see here and that's really what makes the pieces special.

yikes, i can't believe it snowed today! spring in pennsylvania is truly the worst.

i guess i shouldn't be outside anyway, i have a paper to write on the retailing problems faced by abercrombie & fitch. oh, business school.

i've also been reading the shock doctrine by naomi klein for my media in culture class. it's been more than a little bit depressing. and i'm only on the third chapter!

in addition, i don't know if anyone's been following the huge earthquake in l'aquila, italy, but i have family who live in the city and we have yet to find out if they are okay, so i've been a little bit worried about that.

for some reason i have been obsessed with the js wings by jeremy scott for adidas originals ever since pictures of the surreal sneakers surfaced on the internet last year. i really can't explain why. i don't really wear sneakers at all, let alone metallic hightops. i can't even imagine what outfits i would pair with these. all i know is everytime i see a picture of them, my mind is like, "WANT." however, i am restraining myself from getting them, i promise. which isn't too hard seeing as they don't even come in my size and are currently going for over $300 on ebay. i only hope i run into some awesome dude rocking these one day. at which point i will probably stare, point, whisper, squeal, take creepy stalker photos, or all of the above. yeah, i'm embarrassing.

i saw these glasses by prism in the april issue of nylon and for some reason i am obsessed. maybe it's just the picture, but i love that creamy white color, and the triangle logo is...well...for some reason i'm really into triangles. i can't help but think they'd look great with the alex and chloe "black cave" necklace i posted a little bit ago. i just need to know where to purchase these amazing specs! sometimes i hate living in the middle of nowhere.

my recent music-blog-browsing has somehow led me to two very different songs with opposite interpretations of the same theme: (don't) trust me. but both are poppy, catchy, and probably will be on MTV sometime in the next couple months. and although i'm probably going to be sick of them very soon, right now i can't get enough.

"trust me" - sliimy (mediafire)

sliimy is a french pop singer. i guess he got popular by covering britney's "womanizer," which was discovered by (...ughh) perez hilton and posted on his blog for every tween girl in america to listen to. his debut album is coming up on april 6, and i have to say, i'm loving the two songs i've heard from it so far: the title track, "wake up," and this one. cheesy? maybe a little. catchy? hell yes. if you like mika's falsetto voice and cute lyrics and bouncy poppiness, you will probably like sliimy. and yes, he sings in english. unfortunately, i can definitely see myself getting over him fast. maybe that has something to do with the fact that i can seriously predict him showing up on vh1's "artists you gotta know." you know the type...mildly-alternative meaningful pop song with an artsy music video. oh well, for now, this song is definitely going on my daily playlist.

disclaimer: this song is awful. i'm talking worst of the worst electro-alternative-pop song you have ever heard. it sounds like metro station, if metro station said the word "fuck" and injected rap verses into their songs. and if you've never heard metro station, all you need to know is they are basically a kiddiecore version of panic! at the disco with a more electrofied sound and miley cyrus's brother as the frontman. 3oh!3 is definitely trying to capitalize on the success of metro station's hit "shake it" (another super guilty pleasure of mine) with their single "don't trust me." it seems the scene kids really are moving away from hardcore and toward electro. but hey, honestly, if i heard this at a party, i would go crazy. but only if i was really, really drunk, because otherwise i don't know if i could openly admit to liking it. actually, yes i could. i'm admitting it right now. this song is great.

over spring break, i went into nordstrom, a store i hardly ever visit. one reason is that state college has zero luxury department stores. the other reason is that when i am in an area with luxury department stores, i tend to instead gravitate to bloomingdales and neiman marcus because of their wider selection of merchandise. so basically, a trip to nordstrom forces me to look through the racks of designers and brands that i normally would skip right over. yes, that means i really did browse through juicy couture. i also found myself looking through justin timberlake's label, william rast. i hadn't ever actually seen any of the pieces because quite frankly, "celebrity designers" who aren't the olsen twins kind of scare me. but i have to say, i was pleasantly surprised. it's not exactly innovative, but i'd definitely wear a few of the pieces. what a great shape for a leather coat! and the shirts, in person, are super silky soft. good work, JT. how exactly did he turn out to be the most successful former boyband member to come out of the '90s? so strange, really.

so don't kill me but...this post is about gilly hicks, a subsidiary of abercrombie & fitch.

yes, i'm serious. gilly hicks is their new-ish lingerie brand, and i honestly wouldn't have known it existed if i didn't work at tj maxx. a while ago we got a HUGE shipment of their underwear in and i was the one processing it. normally the underwear we get is either granny panties or the unfortunately fugly aerie undies that clearly wouldn't sell. so of course i noticed the gilly hicks underwear...it was soft, cute, tiny (a necessity for me!), and at tj maxx prices, cheap. i put aside a few pairs to buy. little did i know that they were the most comfortable and flattering underwear i have ever worn. when i looked up the brand and found out it was owned by a&f, everything suddenly made sense. their signature super-soft material was the only element that a&f ever had going for it, and though the tight fit and pastel colors aren't exactly my kind of clothing, they translate about a million times better to underwear. so i became a gilly hicks fan. and yes, when we marked them down to $2 at the maxx, i bought out the rest of the stock in my size, 'cause that's how i do.

anyway, the reason i'm discussing my favorite underwear brand is that i just found out that they finally opened their online store at the end of january. YES! since i don't live anywhere near one of their 15 locations, i was definitely excited. the underwear is still overpriced for what it is (the material may be soft, but it is notorious for forming holes), and there's no sale section yet...but i'm keeping my hopes up that it will be added. after all, abercrombie is nothing if not predictable, right?

by the way, we've also been getting intimately by free people undies at tj maxx...what's going on?! i'm keeping my eye on the lingerie department from now on.

i've been eyeing alex & chloe's jewelry for a long time, but their line is so massive that it's been too hard to decide which pieces i want. a feather, a bermuda triangle, a gareth pugh silhouette...not to mention their high-end pieces featuring details like inverted black diamonds, something i can only daydream about at the moment. now, to make my choice even harder, they've released a new collection called TAR, inspired "by objects found in the depths of the earth and sea." some of the TAR pieces are my favorite yet, and i'm thinking that they need to make their way into my wardrobe ASAP. but which ones!?

the chanel runway is always quite nice, but for FW09, i think mr. lagerfeld really nailed it. to me chanel has always embodied a fresh and experimental aesthetic while still maintaining a signature house look and tradition. sometimes it works, sometimes it's a little off. but this collection was the perfect combination of futuristic and familiarity. i don't know if i would personally carry a transparent plastic briefcase or encrust my eyes with rhinestones, but it sure looks sick on the runway. and one thing i am willing to do is use a big fuzzy scarf as a bowtie. adorable!

i'm loving the possibilities of this sunglasses tape by UK label azumi and david. the entire line has a surrealist vibe with silk dresses "pinched" with fake safety pins, chains of plastic glasses frames, and bags shaped like boots. some of it isn't really my style (the scarves with hair are more halloween than margiela) but a lot of the clothing actually looks quite comfy, practical, and wearable. unfortunately, their only US stockist is all the way in LA and the selection in their online store is pretty sparse. come on, where's the east coast love?

i swear i could eat caprese salad every day of my life, and i nearly do. this one from taggia in scottsdale, arizona, was one of the best i've had in a restaurant. the burrata mozzarella was nice and creamy and the pesto was flavorful and fresh. when i make it at home, i prefer to use mozzarella di bufala and completely drench it in extra virgin olive oil (yum). but altogether, this was a great start to a day that ended with an amazing nouveau-sushi dinner at sea saw and gelato and coffee for dessert. unforunately didn't take any sushi pics (i was too busy drooling over the yellowtail with grapefruit and avocado to get out my camera) but i did get a picture of dessert which was simple yet effective.

hello! alex and i just returned from our spring break in arizona. it was the first time out west for both of us, and while it's not somewhere i could ever live, (i think i'm a little too permanently stressed out for the laid-back southwestern lifestyle, haha) we got to see some beautiful scenery, stay at some ridiculously cool hotels, and eat a lot of delicious food. and both of us were excited to get to see the grand canyon! at which we took lots of unflattering pictures. it was so windy!

more pics and talk to come later, i'm sure. for now, i need to catch up on my sleep. also, i promise to coerce alex into contributing to the blog sometime soon. we've both been very busy in the weeks leading up to break. apologies!

i've never been a huge dolce & gabbana fan, but when i saw coco rocha, one of my favorite models, wearing this yeti-esque ensemble on the FW09 runway, i truly fell in love. GORGEOUS!

i should really do some posting about all those fashion shows happening lately (yeah, you know, those ones), but i've been so busy with school that i haven't yet had time to sift through all the collections. my favorites so far, the ones that caught my eye immediately: proenza schouler (jewel tones!), acne (see-thru pants!), diesel black gold (hairnets!), and marc jacobs (80s, 80s, 80s!!). and surprisingly my favorite so far: topshop unique. i know, right? but it seriously blew me away. who doesn't love crazy futuristic grunge ridiculousness?!

call me old-fashioned, but i'm not a huge fan of embedded videos in blogs. even worse is the "vlogging" trend. i don't mind a video post here and there, but a whole blog documented via video somehow just takes away some of the magic. or maybe i just have a short attention span and prefer not to watch a 10-minute video that would have taken 2 minutes to read had it been in written form. either way, i'm not going to post a lot of videos.

however when i see a music video as awesome as this one from natalie portman's shaved head, i can't help but share it. especially since i watched it about twelve times before going to bed last night and had some pretty messed up dreams. i'm not necessarily blaming them on this video, but i'm also not ruling out its possible influence. anyway, the video is so cliche with so many overdone elements that it somehow transcends lameness to become an example of true modern kitsch. plus, you can't deny the innate fierceness of a native american headdress. or, for that matter, the sideways ponytail. enjoy!

a letter to st. patrick's day

for those of you who don't know, as of i believe two years ago, penn state has created this awful holiday called "STATE patty's day," which falls on the saturday before spring break every year. essentially, it is assurance that everyone has the chance to celebrate st. patrick's day, getting around the inconvenience of years when it falls during spring break. and with emphasis on the excessive drinking.

now, i'm all for excessive drinking, but i truly hate st. patrick's day. and here's the story. get ready for a long post...

i've never been into wearing green. it's not my color, unless it's olive or forest. but that bright, obnoxious kelly green that is ubiquitous on march 17th? yeah, not rly my THING. so i never really did it. true, i had to endure a pinch here or there, but for the most part i didn't have to worry because being small, everyone thought the slightest poke could break me. never thought that would have its advantages, did you?

in 8th grade i decided i was an awesomely unique individual. green on st. patrick's day was equal to conformity. and conformity? yeah, not rly my THING. and that's where my true boycott of the holiday began.

9th grade, 10th grade: that was my punk/goth phase. let's just say that at this point wearing green on st. patrick's day was not even an option for two reasons: one, the conformity issue, which had only been magnified. and two, frankly, i didn't have too much green in my wardrobe, unless you count those neon green/black striped knee socks. so instead, i sported an oh-so-witty white t-shirt on which i wrote: "kiss me, i'm not irish." yeah, i was such a rebel...haha. but people started to get smart, they wanted reasons and explanations and words in general out of my mouth. so here's what i came up with: i'm not irish. and it's the truth, really. to my knowledge, there isn't a drop of irish blood in my little italian body. "but everyone is irish on st. patrick's day!" well, not me. i'm italian, through and through, 24/7. it's a full time job, 365 days a year. i guess somebody's gotta do it, right?

another year goes by, another phase, and this time, it's bad: i'm some kind of a wannabe scenester. don't laugh, i really don't want to relive it. of course it was this phase of my life that prompted me to buy my (to this day) treasured "everyone loves an italian girl" t-shirt. when st. patrick's day rolled around, i couldn't help but think it was PERFECT. needless to say, it got a lot of comments at school. most people thought it was funny, but a few people told me to get a life. get a life? why? because i'm not supporting the nationalism of a country which i have NO attachment to? ridiculous, ridiculous, ridiculous. i was happy with my choice of attire.

every year since then, i've worn that same t-shirt. not the most fashionable choice, perhaps, but it's red (conveniently the opposite of green) and it states my opinion: i don't care about irish people. i don't care! i've had people tell me, "you know, irish people faced a lot of prejudice in this country." really? italians faced just as much, and guess what, italian-americans today still get stereotyped as guidos and mobsters. irish-americans? they get their own holiday. i'm not bitter, really. it's stupid to care about something this small when so many other nationalities have so many more problems today. my point is that i just don't see what the big deal is about march 17th.

last year, i caved. what can i say, my best friends were sorority girls. it was st. patrick's day and the only option was to get beyond shitfaced and go to a club called YAB, apparently the hottest monday destination which we had yet to experience due to our own laziness. i wore heels, which was rare considering the cobblestone florence streets, and yes, a green t-shirt. in my defense, it was an AA deep V in forest. to cut a long story short, we got kicked out before we even got in. a friend of a friend got into a fight with the taxi driver and caused a huge scene. apparently, we were trouble, according to the bouncers. after yelling, screaming, crying, pushing, and threats of calling the police (thankfully, they never followed through. some of our nights didn't turn out so lucky) we ended up leaving and walking the mile straight home. well, so much for st. patrick's day.

so with that, i say fuck st. patrick's day. i tried to like you, i tried to have fun. really i did. it just didn't work out. i guess me and st. patrick's day just weren't made to be.
